The Night Newport Went to War
a sensational coup off Newport
In the early hours of 5th August 1914, a small party of police constables and officers together with the harbourmaster headed to the German steamship, SS Belgia.
On board the German ship was a crew of 20 and 76 naval reservists. It was a brave move by those from Newport but they managed to seize the ship in one of the first British actions of World War 1.
